Topic:  Me and my place in space

Level:  4

Teacher:  Elbie

Maple Leaf Schools are implementing a new Curriculum Standard (CS) way of teaching and learning. The CS includes Language Competency (LC), Academic competency (AC), Strategic Competency (SC) and culture awareness. In the preparation of my lesson on Me and my place in space I focused on a task-based lesson that forms part of the outlay of the CS content. I also included culture awareness by explaining to the students that Earth is the only planet in our solar system where living things grow and that all nations live together on Earth.  Students from all over the world learn about the solar system.

The lesson started by firstly using the song called Space Song Rocket Ride. The song is about our solar system in the galaxy and the eight planets. It created the right atmosphere for the story that we were going to read. Songs is an important part of teaching and learning. It is fun for the students to sing and it helps to broaden their vocabulary and improve pronunciation of words.

The second part of the lesson was introducing the new vocabulary on a PPT.  The students read the words and the meaning of each word.  I included pictures for each word to ensure that they understood the meaning of each word.

The third part of the lesson was reading the story from the PPT.  The whole class read some of the pages while the teacher and individual students read the other pages.  Variation makes it more interesting and fun.  I made sure that students pronounced the words correctly and I asked questions while reading the story.

The fourth part of the lesson was playing a game.  I made copies of the eight planets.  The class was divided into six groups.  Each group received the eight planets in an envelope.  They got a big black cardboard strip with the sun and the rings drawn on it.  The had two minutes to put the planets in the correct order from the sun.  They had lots of fun doing this activity.

The fourth part of the lesson:  Each group received the story - the part about the eight planets - cut up into strips. They had to fill in the blanks with the missing words and place the strip under the correct planet.  Each student received a copy of the story.  This way they had to scan for the answers and fill in the missing words.  There were eight strips - 5 students in a group - so I wrote the names of each student at the back of the strips.  I wanted to avoid confusion.  The first ones to finish in the group could take another strip until all eight strips were completed and put under the planets.  Students liked the activity and were successful in completing the activity.  We checked the answers by asking individual students from the different groups to read the strips they stuck under each planet.

The final activity was doing a worksheet. The students had to read the information about each planet, cut it out and stick it next to the correct planet.  They didn’t finish in class and had to complete it for homework.
