Just try, come on baby.”“You made it.  Excellent! ”

Topic:  Good dental habits

Level:  1

Teacher:  Maria

Maple Leaf Schools are implementing a new Curriculum Standard (CS) way of teaching and learning. The CS includes Language Competency (LC), Academic competency (AC), Strategic Competency (SC) and culture awareness. In the preparation of my lesson on Good dental habits, I focused on a task-based lesson that forms part of the outlay of the CS content. I also included culture awareness by explaining to the students of a global awareness by the World Dental Federation (FDI), informing people across the world that dental health can improve general health.

The lesson started by firstly reviewing the 4 phrases that students had learned in Unit 7 lesson 4 (LC – Listening) by using the Wake-up song. The song describes the daily routine of a student.  Songs are an important part of teaching and learning. It is fun for the students to sing and it helps to broaden their vocabulary and improve pronunciation of words.

The second phase of the lesson started by instructing students to engage in an activity that required pair work. Pair work is also in the CS guidelines under Academic Competency. Students received an envelope. In the envelope I placed scrambled words of phrases. First,  students 1 had to try to place the scrambled words in the correct order to ‘build’ the phrases that was reviewed. Student number 2 had to observe if students 1 was able to complete the task correctly and then the roles were reversed and it was the turn of student 2 to unscramble the words in the correct phrase. Students enjoyed the activity and was successful in completing the task.

After making sure all students finished the task I wanted to create a real scenario to make the transition from one activity to another more clearly to students. Beforehand I asked my colleague Ashe to pretend to have a toothache. Ashe and I then did a short role play where she pretended to have a very painful toothache and I quickly took out my medicine kit to “pull” her tooth.  That set the tone for the Brushing song (SC – singing).

Resulting from the song, I put the flashcards up on the writing board to remind students what the 2-minute rules for brushing teeth were (LC – speaking).  Next Winbo, one of the students demonstrated brushing our teeth by making use of our big teeth set to show and remind students how to apply the brushing rules.

Then students had the opportunity to brush their teeth in class. They had to follow the 2-minute rule. It was pure pleasure to see how the students met this challenge with enthusiasm.  Some student’s mouths were drenched in foam.  It was an unusual experience for the students brushing their teeth in class, but they had a lot of fun. They had to make sure Jeremy germ was no where to be seen.

Finally, students then played a game putting “teeth” on the cavities. (SC – listening). It was important to make sure all students participated in as many activities as possible.  Secondly, this exercise should lead to promote and improve our student’s dental and general health. (Cultural awareness)

After the lesson, students were ask to give reflection of the lesson. Almost all the students said that the lesson was fun. Here are some individual responses:

Candy: “It was unforgettable.  I was so happy.”

Winbo: “Why does my teacher have those big teeth?  It was so funny!”

Leon: “It was so funny and interesting.”
