The Power to Visualize,

On the afternoon of March 6, GEP staff had the fifth workshop on Reading Power ------ The Power to Visualize.

ESL coordinator Maria designed a booklet of “Maple Leaf ESL Support for Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies” for all teachers to review the Powers we have talked about through singing. The talented ladies composed melodies for Connecting, Questioning and Inferring. We had so much fun singing the songs together!

As the leader of Reader Rafting Program, Maria recommended several good books for teachers to teach reading power. What’s more, she prepared a mini exhibition to show students’ reading posters, reading journals, reading logs and other achievements of teachers’ reading classes from last semester.

The Reading Power strategies are important not only in English reading but also in the general sense of reading. Where visualizing fits into CS, the concept of visualizing, and the 6-step method to teach Reading Power lesson etc. were well illustrated in GEP Director Vicki’s presentation. Teachers also realized that the proper content is important to teach students how to visualize. In addition to picture words, sensory words are good choices to help students visualize when they are reading.

Combining the power to connect and question, we had a reading activity of visualizing. Listening to a story without images, everyone drew and exchanged their own pictures about the same story. Vicki emphasized that teachers can do a lot of things with even one book, not limited to one competence.

Afterwards, Elementary School ESL Director Amy organized a writing activity with teachers based on visualizing. With the topic of writing a color poem, she explained how to make use of imagination and other senses to visualize. Additionally, a variety of resources and graphic organizers were shared to help students visualize.

“Books are much more than a bunch of words. They are keys that unlock the imagination.” The Power to Visualize makes reading more vivid.
