悦读,让读书成为一种习惯

——Reader Rafting阅读项目系列报道(六)

This was my second attempt at getting students to read with a purpose and to my surprise, it worked perfectly, to some extent. I started my class by reminding students to be responsible and mature. I asked them to follow some simple rules while going to library and whilst in the library. It was one of the best behaviour I have gotten out of them yet and I am very pleased with them.

这是我第二次指导学生进行目的性阅读,大家的积极性很高,阅读效果也不错。在去图书馆之前,我向同学们强调了纪律和规则,所以不论是整队去图书馆的路上还是在图书馆阅读时,大家的表现都非常好。

Back to my objectives, which was to get students to read actively and regularly, I adopted a technique of making a simple reading journal with many tasks. Some are simple and some are difficult. This allows all students to find a task they can do regardless of their reading skills. For the weaker students, it gives them a chance to build up their skills enough to do the difficult task.

阅读课的主要目的是让学生能有固定的时间积极阅读。为此,我特意制作了阅读日志,指导学生们带着任务阅读。阅读日志里的任务难易程度各异,这样每个人都能找到并完成符合自己英语能力的任务。对于基础薄弱的学生,他们也能够通过阅读日志逐步提高阅读技巧,由易到难地完成阅读任务。

I also set a few restrictions; each week, students must complete one task, if by next week they haven’t done a task, they will be asked to stay with their homeroom teacher on reading day followed by a random punishment from a list of punishments. They will also be required to make-up the missed task by next week if they don’t want the same process repeated.

我设定了阅读日志的任务要求和期限。比如,每人每周至少要完成一项任务;如果到下周前一个任务都没有完成,那么在阅读日当天他们会随机受到一个“小惩罚”。如果不想重复受罚,他们就必须在下周前补做一个阅读任务。

To keep track of their progress, students were asked to purchase a folder to keep their completed tasks and the journal. As each task is completed, students can show the completed task to me, and I will stamp the journal activity with my customised stamp. A record will also be kept on computer for students who complete more than required tasks to make sure they are at least doing one task every week.

为了跟进阅读进度,我要求每个学生都准备一个文件夹,专门用来整理和收集自己完成的任务和阅读日志。每当完成一个任务,他们可以来我这里盖一枚定制章。我也会记录每位学生的阅读进度来检查他们完成任务的情况。

On the introduction day, I introduced 5 tasks they can choose from a list of 80 tasks on their journal to stop them from being overwhelmed. Some tasks are suited for fiction books, some for non-fiction and many are suited for both. Students are free to complete more than one task if they want.

Fiction—Pick a Character from the story and draw it!

Non-Fiction—Write down 5 facts you learned from the book!

Choose a page and write down all the adjectives.

Choose a page and write down all the nouns.

Make a list of questions you asked yourself as you read the book.

阅读日志上的80个任务是一学年的。今天的阅读课我挑选了5个阅读任务,不论是小说类还是非小说类读物,同学们都能完成至少一个任务。

小说类——挑选并画出书中的一个角色

非小说类——写下你从书中了解到的五个事实

找出书中任意一页的所有形容词

找出书中任意一页的所有名词

列出你在阅读这本书时想到的所有问题

My following lesson will lead students into questioning where I will introduce asking questions whilst reading to predict the future based on images or text. For such classes, students will be asked to complete a specific task in their journal.

下节阅读课,我会教授学生们“阅读力”中的“提问力”和“推测力”,指导他们运用阅读技巧进行阅读,并完成特定的阅读任务。

Overall, I believe it was a good class compared to a regular class and they enjoyed the change. There are few things I would change for my next class to allow more time in library or do the teaching on a separate day and have a day solely form library to allow time to complete a task on the same day. I would also cover the vocabulary needed for each task and make sure students know what they need to do as few students were unsure in library.

相比常规英语课堂,在图书馆阅读给学生们带来了一丝新鲜感。总结今天的阅读课,下节课我会进行一些优化,比如给学生们更多的时间在图书馆阅读,或在当天完成阅读任务,以及帮助学生提前熟悉阅读任务中的重难点词汇,保证他们清楚自己要完成的任务等。
