The Story of the Titanic

——Reader Rafting

In Of Study by Francis Bacon, a British philosopher and writer, it is said, “Histories make men wise.” Today, let’s read the historic “Titanic” event with Level 6 students with ESL teacher Arno’s guidance.

Arno, Level 5/6 ESL Teacher

“The lesson objectives were to analyze the design of the Titanic and to understand what happened to the ship. Meta-cognition was involved for the students to think deeply about what happened to a ship as famous as the Titanic and lesson learned from the tragedy that changed the course of handling tragedies, lessons learnt today. Inferring was used to look for clues that caused Titanic’s tragedy and ask the students to visualize how it sank and what should have been done to ensure there were more survivors than deaths.

After reading about the capabilities of the Titanic and its Maiden Voyage, learning reasons why it was not a success, students were asked to design a poster. They could visualize and design a poster of their own ship, find a name for it, discuss its capabilities, what makes it special and its maiden voyage. The students were to present their posters and talk about them in class. The students presenting are to persuade their audience why they should purchase tickets for their ship.

After students have presented their first series of posters, we continue with the second part of the story. Discussing the sinking of the Titanic, how many survivors there were and from which classes they came. Next, students worked in pairs to design a Breaking News article about the Titanic disaster. This was also to be presented in class. They had to present and explain why it sank.

In this reading class, students not only learned a historic even what happened 106 years old, but also improved their meta-cognition and reading abilities. See you soon in next reading class!
