On Jan. 18, Dr. Lynn Luo, the Vice Principal of MLES Research Institute, delivered a training session on English writing instruction based on “Maple Leaf ESL Curriculum Standards” to all Wuhan GEP bilingual teachers, presenting a model of transition from knowledge-oriented teaching to skill-oriented teaching.

2018118日,我们有幸邀请到枫叶研究院副院长罗郁博士为武汉大英语中心的双语老师们进行了一次基于《枫叶ESL分级课程标准》的英语写作教学培训,帮助老师们从以教材为导向的英语教学向以能力为导向的英语教学转型,从而更好地授以学生写作技能,提高学生写作水平。

As the end of this semester approaches, teachers aired their views on how to write work summary freely. Afterwards, Dr. Lynn Luo led in several important concepts related to English writing, and analyzed some rewriting activities. Taking the “Spring Festival” for an example, teachers can help generate students’ ideas through showing pictures or a video clip, organize their thoughts and enlarge their vocabulary through brainstorming. Our teachers also did several exercises to have a better understanding of these instructions.

临近期末,罗博士便以撰写期末工作总结为导入,和老师们一起讨论工作总结的撰写思路。大家畅所欲言,有的老师以工作内容为重点,围绕收获和不足写作;有的老师则以提纲为写作框架,再对细节进行填充。随后,罗博士以此引入了写作的几个相关概念——写作对象、写作目的、写作文体,并对写作前的活动举例进行了解析。比如以“春节”为主题,老师们可以通过看图写作训练学生结构性思维,通过头脑风暴帮助学生梳理思考方向,丰富英语词汇,搭建语言支撑。这不,老师们也当了回学生,通过几篇范文进行练习,更深入地了解三个概念和写作过程对于写好一篇作文的重要性。

Additionally, Dr. Lynn Luo demonstrated some graphic organizers to help students do planning for writing, such as Story Graph, Character Traits Form, and Personal Narrative Organizer, etc.; especially in the “Show Not Tell” Graph, writers can learn how to show readers what they mean by using descriptions rather than just telling the key words.

除了理论的学习,当然也少不了工具的辅助。罗博士和大家分享的发散型导图、故事导图、人物性格图表等思维导图为老师们启发学生思考,分析写作步骤,扩展写作语言提供了很好的素材。特别是Show Not Tell导图,可以帮助学生们更加关注写作细节,即使不写出重点词汇,也能让读者身临其境,体会到作者的写作意图。

In the end, Dr. Lynn Luo shared the sample essays written by English teachers from other campuses to introduce the contextualized writing, laying the foundation of teaching English narrative writing in the future. As for the writing strategies of students at different levels, we are going to have further thorough discussions in the coming workshops.

最后,罗博士还和大家分享了其他校区几位英语老师关于“英语随笔化作文”的探索和课例,让老师们对记叙文写作向“随笔化”方向发展有初步的认识,为以后的英语记叙文写作教学奠定了基础。而关于学生分级后各个级别写作策略的学习,也将在今后的教研中进行深入的探讨和学习。

Learning and communication in each workshop is a rare chance for teachers to expand horizons so as to enrich and improve ourselves, thus guiding students to master the skills to use English properly and abilities to think in English.

每次学习和交流都是一次弥足珍贵的机会。老师们只有放开眼界去学习、去沟通,才能丰富自己、提高自己,从而帮助学生在学习英语语言之外,掌握正确使用英语和用英语思考的能力。
