Topic:  Listening – follow instructions (Basketball)
Teacher:  Wilma
Maple Leaf Schools are implementing a new Curriculum Standard (CS) way of teaching and learning. The CS includes Language Competency (LC), Academic competency (AC), Strategic Competency (SC) and Culture Awareness(CA).
In the preparation of my lesson on Listening I focused on students following various listening instructions as outlined in the CS content.  I also included culture awareness by explaining to the students of the International Federation of Basketball (FIBA). FIBA strives to promote and regulates basketball across the world. Basketball is a sport that is played in many countries. It is a sport that is also played on national, provincial and local levels by different culture groups.
The planning of the lesson took a lot of pre-planning. The focus of my lesson was to introduce students to diverse foreign speaking accents. I also wanted to include different types of listening activities to bring a little bit of fun into a listening test.
First, I started the lesson by showing the students Yao Ming and Michael Jordan. It was important for me that the students would understand that basketball is a universal sport (CA).
Task 1 was an activity-based listening test. Students received 3 skewer sticks. They had to watch the video and follow the instructions on the video done by Amanda. Students had to try to toss one skewer stick in the air and catch and balance it on 2 skewer sticks. This was a warm up activity that also included some stretching.
Task 2 students had to listen and spell the words. As part of scaffolding I started with words. Maria pre-recorded the words and the students had to write it down on the Green Task 1’s paper. (All the tasks were on different color paper. )
After task 2 I made use of students to help me demonstrate the six keywords. Students like to play with a ball. They had a lot of fun throwing and catching the ball. The keywords were: throw, catch, bounce, dribble, rebound and contact. It is important to try to involve students in the lesson. I believe it help them to become more self-confident and they feel part of the teaching and learning process.
Next task 3, we played Bingo. Students had to listen to the instructions that was pre-recorded by Elbie. I wrote the 15 words on pop-sickle sticks. Then randomly students and teachers were asked to choose a word and read the word to the class. Hence everyone in the room was part of this activity. Jenny, one of the students shouted ‘Bingo’. Before she could receive the prize for winning she had to try to shoot the ball trough the hoop. It was a bit of a struggle at first but it was still a lot of fun.
Task 4 was a poster description. I placed six different posters of six basketball players on the bulletin board in the class. Each poster had a different letter attached to the poster. The instructions and descriptions were also pre-recorded by Sheetal. The students had to listen to the description of the player and identified the name of the player by choosing the letter next to his name.
Task 5 was more challenging to the students. The task was divided into 3 columns (chart orientated listening). The students had to listen to the information about ‘playing positions’, pre-recorded by Brandon and complete the handout.
Although planning the lesson and the pre-preparations was a lot of work, the students had a lot of fun. It was a fun class to teach. I want to thank all the teachers that was willing to assist with either input, suggestions, video and audio recordings. It is true that if we work together as a team, the success of a lesson belongs to the team and not just the individual teacher. All and all it was a fun class!
